Winter Bird Ornaments

Last Updated on October 21, 2020 by lydiaf1963

A long time ago I saw this cute Winter Bird Ornament online, I think on Etsy, but don’t quote me on that. I saved the photo to my Homemade Christmas Pinterest Board and even bought some yarn and other things to make them. The holiday season rolled around and other things prevented me from making my ornaments.

The Inspiration Piece

Next Christmas I thought, “This year I’ll make those Winter Bird Ornaments.” So I transferred the photo to a document in order to size it. In those days I didn’t have a printer at home and I never seemed to find the time to go to the print shop although I did order the snowflake charms and found the jingle bells I’d bought the year before.

When I finally got to the print shop it was springtime, but at least I had everything I needed. Fast forward to this year when I came across the print out and the yarn and the rest while organizing my workshop.  The project is FINALLY complete and I’m really happy with how they turned out. Better late than never, I suppose.
Supplies needed to make WInter Bird OrnamentsYou can see the original is some type of wood which I didn’t want to deal with, even if I could source it. My solution was to make a sandwich of paper and the thin cardboard from a cereal box. Foam board could be a good choice, too.

I traced the design onto my paper sandwich and cut it out. Then I punched a hole for hanging and used a marker to draw the eyes and tail feathers on both sides of the bird.Photo of Winter Bird Ornaments before they've been decorated

The next step was to knit the sweaters. The yarn is mohair and originally I thought to pair it with a sock weight yarn but preferred how it looked when I doubled it.

One sweater is plain stockinette and the other is 2×2 rib. I cast on 28 stitches and joined the yarn to knit in the round. It was kind of fiddly to deal with the mohair but once I had completed a few rows things moved along smoothly. From time to time I checked the length with the bodies and when needed I stacked a couple of yarn overs to make room for the feet.

I knit these in the round, but you could also knit an appropriately sized piece flat and sew a seam in the back. You could also crochet something.

In the end, I took a tuck in the back of the sweater to tighten it around the bird. In the ribbed sweater I also ran a length around the bottom to cinch it up.

Once the sweaters were finished it was just a matter of attaching the snowflake charms and the bells. I’m at a loss as to why it took me so long, but I am almost positive I’m not the only one with an unfinished project lying around!
