Make a Colorful Crocheted Cosmetics Bag Using Tapestry Crochet

Last Updated on October 21, 2020 by lydiaf1963

If you know how to do single crochet you can make this fun and colorful cosmetics bag! This project is a great stash buster, too, because you can mix and match the colors to suit the yarns you have on hand.

I’ve wanted to try tapestry crochet for a long time. I have several cool projects pinned to my Crochet Your Heart Out board as well as charts suitable for any yarn craft on my Pattern Inspiration board. Eventually I chose this pin from DIYHowTo which features a free pattern from Katia yarns.

The blog post attached to the pin also has other projects and videos and there’s also a video with details on making the Katia bag within the pattern. Download the pdf file here.

The fabric created with tapestry crochet is very dense which makes it a perfect choice for a bag that is likely to hold small items. If you don’t need a cosmetic bag it would be great used as a project bag or even a summer clutch.

Here’s what you’ll need to make the crocheted cosmetic bag

  • worsted or sport weight cotton yarn (choose a weight with the recommend needle size is 3 – 4 mm) I used 5 different colors of a nice cotton acrylic yarn I’ve used in other projects. You won’t need a full skein of any yarn.
  • 3 or 3.5 mm crochet hook (The pattern calls for a 3mm hook)
  • removable stitch marker
  • A button that matches the yarn you’ve chosen. Mine was 1″ wide.
  • needle to sew on the button (I split the yarn and used it to sew the button on)
  • scissors

These are the skills you’ll need

  • crochet in the round
  • single crochet through the back loop
  • reading a color chart
  • organizing the yarns and keeping the tension even to avoid “bleed through”

Two things challenged me.

  1. After making the foundation chain, you single crochet in the front and back of the chain to make an oval shape. Working on the “wrong” side of the chain is a challenge for me. Make your foundation as loose as you can without being sloppy.
  2. Dealing with the tangled yarns can be a pain. Eventually I made sure to always pull the yarn in the same direction when changing colors. I still had to untangle the strands, but it was easier to untwist them when I moved the yarn in a consistent way.

My bag measured 11″ long (9″ closed) x 9 inches wide. It’s a good size for storing just about anything. I’m pleased with how it turned out. I like the sherbert colors even though they aren’t typically colors I wear or decorate with. It will come in handy.

This post is part of a monthly challenge hosted by Erlene of My Pinterventures. The idea is to create something we’ve curated on Pinterest.

Here’s what I’ve made so far this year:

Me, either, until I saw some examples in a couple facebook groups. I love the variety of patterns but some crocheters create images, landscapes and portraits.
