Bobble Stitch Farmers Market Bag

Last Updated on October 21, 2020 by lydiaf1963

Summer bags are such a riot of color and texture. Every year I look forward to choosing a new bag. Sometimes I’ll pick a straw bag, other years it will be macrame or jute. This year I decided to try my hand at making one. This farmers market bag is crocheted using cotton yarn and the pattern is currently available for free when you join Annie’s Crochet Group on Facebook.

Once I downloaded the pattern I headed out to purchase cotton yarn and some contrasting fabric to line my bag (I’ll talk about how to do that in another post). I bought 3 skeins of I Love This Cotton from Hobby Lobby. The color is called Buttercup.

The bag is designed to be 16″ wide by 28″ tall, including the straps. I didn’t do a test swatch (sad face). As a consequence, my bag ended up more like a purse than a market bag, which actually works out fine for me. I have lots of bags I can take to the market. What I’m lacking is a fun summer purse.

If you’re an experienced crocheter, the pattern is straightforward and easy to follow with a section for special stitches and a review section of standard crochet stitches. The designer uses American terms. New crocheters may have some trouble following the instructions, especially if you’re not familiar with the stitches. Just remember there’s a chain space between the crossed stitches and refer to the pattern photos for guidance. Once you’ve learned the pattern you’ll breeze along.

This is a great summer project. It’s relatively small and portable and the stitches are all variations of double crochet. There’s a mesh pattern, a crossed stitch pattern and a bobble or popcorn stitch. They all add to the overall texture of the bag. The straps feature the mesh pattern and there’s a combination of single crochet and reverse single crochet to give a nice corded detail around the opening of the bag.

The pattern offer ends on July 31, 2019. If you’re reading this afterwards (or you’re not on Facebook) you can purchase both the pattern and all the supplies from Annie’s Catalog.

The project is part of an ongoing Pinterest challenge hosted by Erlene of My Pinterventures. You can find the original pin and more crochet patterns on my Crochet Your Heart Out Pinterest Board.
