How To Make Your Own Poo Spray
Last Updated on June 18, 2019 by lydiaf1963
I’ll bet you’ve seen the commercials with the very proper English woman talking about PooPourri, a product that will mask bathroom smells. Well, I’ve made some, and it does smell good. It also covers most bathroom smells. As we all know, there are some that require opening a window. Let’s talk about how to make your own poo spray. It’s not difficult and you can purchase everything you need online.
Today I want to introduce you to a new challenge on Life Beyond the Kitchen. Erlene over at My Pinterventures came up with an idea to prod a group of bloggers into making something we’ve curated from Pinterest. Since last June I’ve been doing the challenge over on Lydia’s Flexitarian Kitchen (see the archives here). But I have a lot of crafting and home pins, too. So I decided to switch over to this blog for the time being.
But you don’t care about that! The sooner you learn how to make your own poo spray the quicker your family will stop choking and gagging after [insert the stinkiest family member’s name here] does their business.
What you’ll need to make your own poo spray
- essential oils
- witch hazel
- vegetable glycerin
- 4 or 8 oz glass spray bottles (I bought 8 oz so I could use the other bottles for other projects, but the “recipe” will fill a 4 oz bottle.)
- a funnel to fit your bottle or a measuring cup with a spout
Ever since I started making my own exfoliating scrubs I’ve wanted to work more with essential oils around the home. This seemed like a fun project, not to mention useful! Sarah over at One Essential Community provided the inspiration and she has a number of different “recipes” to combat bathroom odors in her post. I used the lemongrass and peppermint option but I like the idea of changing the scents. That’s part of the reason why I bought an assortment of oils. I’m looking forward to experimenting…maybe gingerbread for Christmastime?
Measure the ingredients into the spray bottle
- 1/3 cup Witch Hazel
- 2 Tablespoons Glycerin
- 30 drops of essential oil (I used 20 drops lemongrass + 10 drops peppermint)
Visit the linked post above for more ideas.
How Poo Spray Works
Before using the toilet shake the bottle and spray 4 – 5 times on the surface of the water. The glycerin floats on the water and forms a seal, trapping odors beneath. When you flush, the essential oils are released into the air.
That’s the theory, anyway. So far it’s doing the trick in our house. But, as my son reminded me with a grin, it hasn’t really been tested yet.
If you’d like, print out a label with instructions. I didn’t bother as I don’t have access to a color printer at the moment, but if I did, I’d call my spray Gee, You Smell A Lot Like Flowers!
As mentioned, this is a challenge. Be sure to browse through the link up below to see what my blogging friends have made. You’ll also find a link to participate in next month’s challenge. Why not give it a try? It’s fun!

diffidently saving this pin. I love making homemade cleaning and sprays. Thanks for sharing!
Yes, it’s kind of fun 🙂 Thanks for dropping by!
It’s great to know how to make your very own poo spray since the commercial stuff can be quite expensive. I like that you can use different kinds of fragrances!
Me, too! I had to purchase the supplies to set it up, but I should be able to recoup the supply cost easily. Thanks!
I am really looking forward to trying this. I have a lot of essential oils, and I actually think I have all of the other ingredients, too. I’ve seen those commercials, but never thought about making my own!
I’ve always used vanilla or tea tree oil, because I use them regularly. I’m glad to have a few more oils to choose from now. I hope you give it a try. It’s super easy.
So simple! Pinned.
Thanks for pinning! I was pleased with how easy it was to mix it together.
Haha, that’s so funny what your son said. I have to try this. Every bathroom should have this.
I made the spray for my benefit hahaha.
Really like the idea behind this. Save money. Less plastic thrown away. Aerosol cans avoided. Now to just make this easy product and actually use it. Sigh. I think the hardest part would be changing the habit to spray after the fact. LOL
We’re going through the same process with regard to changing when we spray. You’ll still get the benefit of the essential oils if you forget. Thanks!
I featured a very similar recipe for a poo pourri knockoff a few months ago. Didn’t ask for witch hazel but I like that idea. Will add it to my next batch. The stuff does work!!
It didn’t occur to me to omit or change any of the ingredients. I don’t know enough about oils and their carriers at this point. Interesting there are different ways to mix it. Thanks!
Interesting about the glycerin – didn’t know exactly how it was supposed to work! I could have used this when all my kids lived at home!
We have a poo spray in our bathroom and I think it works. It helps mask the stink…lol. Anyway, this makes me want to try making my own instead of buying it. Pinned for later.
I stumbled over PooPouri once before and forgot about it again. Thank you for bringing it up again. It’s a useful DIY for ones home…and I like that.
I’d love to make my own because I want to get rid of all the harsh chemicals in the commercial ones
I saw poo spray recently in my niece’s bathroom I thought it was a joke spray. I will have to show her this. Pinned
