Framed Vases Make a Fun Display

These framed vases were inspired by Pinterest and have their roots in an impulse buy made several years ago. They have been a delightful addition to our dining room where they’ve received many compliments.

Confession time

I’m a bit embarrassed to admit this, but we’re all crafters here…y’all will understand…

glass vases from Flying Tiger

Those vases moved with me from Spain to Maryland. For whatever reason, I was reluctant to put them out on the street for the neighborhood to pick through. Plus, they were still in the original boxes.

I bought them from a store called Flying Tiger. It’s a fun, cheap place to shop in. It’s similar to IKEA in that you have to wind your way through the store to get to the register. Along the way you’ll see toys, craft items, cards, linens and small household goods designed in Copenhagen. They have an online shop, but don’t ship to the US at the moment. I impulsively bought the vases because cool stuff in the Tiger store doesn’t last long.

Not sure if upcycling, repurposing or something else

This month’s Sustainable Pinterest Challenge theme is “upcycle.”

staining the frames

I was actually thinking to upcycle a thrifted frame as in this pin but I kept coming up empty handed during my searches. The size was off for the vases I had, or I couldn’t find a two that matched, or even coordinated. It was getting a bit stressful, to be honest.

Finally, I remembered a pair of long canvases leftover from another project and decided to use them. Sometimes you have to let go of the image in your head and work with what you have.

The frame size fit my vases, so it was just a matter of a quick stain then off to the local craft store for some nice single flower picks while the frames dried. I chose daisies in a color that works with the curtains in the dining room.

framed vases hanging vertically

I tried hanging them vertically, but the flowers stick out too far and I could imagine them interfering with opening the pantry or operating the light switch.

Moving them to the wall space between the pantry and the furnace closet worked the best.

I’m not sure what I’ll do with my framed vases when I change my seasonal décor. I may fill them with greenery and see how it goes. Or not. I have lots of ideas for that space.

Welcome to the Sustainable Pinterest Challenge!
