Craft Kits Inspire Creativity

I’ve recently tried two craft kits for adults that have been very helpful in keeping my creative juices flowing.

Break out of a creative slump with an adult craft kit

Since the whole Covid-19 thing started I’ve been in a bit of a slump. It’s not just me, is it?

At first I had plans for working through my unfinished knitting projects, but after a while it became difficult to find the enthusiasm to do anything but veg out in front of the TV with a glass of wine and some snacks. I won’t bore you with the details, we’re all dealing with Covid as best we can. Suffice it to say I needed a change.

A small quilting project was the perfect pick me up

I have an affiliate relationship with Annie’s Catalog. If you click a link and make a purchase I may earn a commission.

One day, while sorting through my craft supplies in search of inspiration, I came across a quilting kit from Annie’s. It was a project from their monthly Quilting Club. I had gifted a subscription to my daughter and she, in turn, wanted me to pick a project to do.

I liked a project which was intended to be a pillow top. My plan was to use it as a table topper for my night stand.

Each quilting kit comes with a coordinated selection of fabrics and instructions to make a project. The fabrics for my project were gorgeous with shades for greens, blues and some golds. They are of good quality, too. All the fat quarters were cut properly, none of those odd trapezoidal shapes I’ve run into before. After washing and ironing the fabrics I started cutting and organizing the pieces according to the instructions.

It wasn’t long before I was ready to begin sewing everything together. In a short while, I had something to protect my night stand from stains. I even have plenty of fabric leftover, some of which I turned into masks.

Annie’s offers subscriptions for a variety of adult craft kits as well as some designed for children. They come with almost everything you need. You’ll have to provide some tools and common household items like thread and pins in the case of my project.

The best part is, even though my project is complete, I can use the instructions to make another one, maybe next time I’ll actually make a pillow.

Adult Paint By Numbers

Winnie’s Picks generously provided me everything I needed to paint this abstract cat project in exchange for my honest review. I am not otherwise affiliated with them.

It was a pleasant surprise when Winnie’s Picks reached out to me. They even shipped the kit I chose all the way to Spain. Everything I needed was in the package: canvas, paints, an assortment of brushes and a diagram which turned out to be extremely useful at times. They also have instructions for framing the canvas using stretchers, which are available as a separate purchase.

To keep the canvas flat, I taped it to my largest cutting mat which also allow me to turn it on my workspace. I kept my brushes, paints, a bowl of water and some paper towels on a tray nearby.

The instructions advised working from left to right (or right to left for lefties like me) but I didn’t do that until later in the project. I started filling in the colors by number.

My feeling is it took longer to complete the project because I did it that way, but it was very relaxing to do. Dipping the brush and filling the proper space without being too sloppy was challenging and calmed the mind until it was just me, the brush and the canvas.

I have a lot to learn about handling a the various types of brushes but as time went on, I worked out whether the paints needed to be thinned a little and how to roll my brush to keep the point nice and my stokes neat (well, neatER, anyway.)

Winnie’s Picks has a large variety of projects to choose from. Landscapes, animals, florals, modern, classic, there’s something to appeal to everyone. They will even create a custom canvas from a photo. You won’t be disappointed in the quality, either. The paints were well organized and the brushes didn’t fall apart or shed after a few uses.

Are you in a creative slump?

Why not purchase a craft kit that captures your imagination. These two projects are only a drop in the sea of available kits and projects you can buy.
