Stay Focused with the Momentum Browser App

I don’t know about you, but I tend to have a lot of tabs open when I’m using my browser. That’s why I was excited to learn about a browser app for Chrome and Firefox called Momentum. When I open a new tab, Momentum displays a gorgeous photo and an encouraging quote. It also gives a gentle reminder of what I’ve decided was the single most important thing I need to accomplish. It’s a great way to stay focused.

How do I install Momentum?

It’s super easy to install, just go to the Momentum website and they will get you started. You’ll need to create an account. Once installed, everytime you open a new tab you will see a personal dashboard similar to the one pictured below.

The free version has a built in To Do list and displays the local weather. However, the Plus version will integrate with other productivity apps like Google Tasks, Trello and Asana. You can also upload your own photos and inspirational quotes plus change the fonts to personalize your dashboard.

Breaking down a larger To Do List into one specific to the day is Momentum’s second most important feature.

How does the Momentum browser app help me with my blogging?

What I like best about Momentum is the ability to set a FOCUS. My To Do List is pretty long and I get sidetracked more often than I care to admit. Every time I open a new tab, Momentum reminds me of the one task I feel is the most important. It helps ensure I’m putting my effort where I want it.

What’s the ONE Thing I could do, such that by doing it everything else would be easier or unnecessary?

Gary Keller

This concept from Gary Keller may help you decide where to put your focus for the day. It’s similar to prioritizing tasks but it also involves minimizing by de-emphasizing unimportant tasks, like obsessively answering emails. As you remove the distractions what’s left is the ONE Thing.

I first heard of the ONE Thing from Jennifer Maker. You’ll want to check out her blog, especially if you have a Cricut. She also runs the Blog What You Love Facebook group. In the group she generously shares her methods for growing a wildly successful blog and YouTube channel.

I don’t want to get off track here, so I’ve placed links to Gary Keller’s book at the bottom of the post.

Now, I can hear some of you saying, “I don’t have time to read another productivity book.” OK, fine! Here’s a summary you will find useful.

Momentum is a regular reminder of what’s important to me as a blogger

As you can see from the screen shot above, my current focus is to edit a video. It’s something I’ve been struggling to do. I can come up with a million reasons why I’d rather do anything other than watch (or worse, listen to) myself and edit my efforts into something others will want to see.

On the other hand, I’m well aware that video is where everything is headed when it comes to blogging. Video is the ONE Thing I feel will help my blogs grow. Whenever I hop on the web to do anything other than edit video, Momentum will remind me where my priorities should be.

For now, the free version of Momentum is keeping me on track. The photos are pretty and the inspirational quotes are just as pithy as the motivational posters that were popular in the 90s. Perhaps you’d like to give it a try yourself.

Tell me, what’s your ONE Thing? It doesn’t have to be blog related. Would you benefit from using the Momentum Browser App?
