Just Read These Books! {Hetta Coffey Books #Review}
Last Updated on August 2, 2017 by lydiaf1963
One of the reasons I started a second blog (aside from insanity) was to do book reviews. I do a lot of reading and not just cookbooks! Thanks to Kindle Unlimited (this and all the other links are affiliate links) I can read an incredible variety of books for only $9.99 a month. Before signing up for the program I was easily spending two to three times that, even when purchasing the books formatted for Kindle. The best part is discovering new writers and unforgettable characters. Like Hetta Coffey, the star of a set of hilarious novels based on her (mis)adventures written by Jinx Schwartz.
Here’s what they’re saying about Just Add Water, the first book in the series and winner of the National EPPIE Award for Best Mystery:
HETTA COFFEY IS A SASSY TEXAN WITH A SNAZZY YACHT, AND SHE’S NOT AFRAID TO USE IT!
Hetta Coffey is a globe-trotting civil engineer with a swath of failed multi-national affairs in her jet stream.
Plying the San Francisco waterfront, trolling for triceps, her attention is snagged by a parade of passing yachts—especially their predominantly male skippers—and experiences a champagne-induced epiphany: If she had a boat, she could get a man.
In spite of a spectacular ignorance of all things nautical, Hetta buys her dream boat, but a shadowy stalker, an inconvenient body, and Hetta’s own self-destructive foibles imperil her goal. Hetta Coffey brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “sink or swim!”
Are you intrigued yet? I find Hetta’s over the top personality, penchant for bad boys, and her ability to spin a yarn (which always seems to put her in the best possible light) to be laugh out loud funny. She’s brash, obnoxious and vulnerable all at the same time. Since reading the first novel, I’ve worked my way through the remaining ones and am currently waiting for the next installment.
The recurring characters are just as interesting as Hetta. There’s her best friend and partner in crimeadventure, Jan and her long-distance love, Jenks. There’s also a cast of interesting friends and villains that make regular appearances. My favorite is the sexy and dangerous “Nacho.” Hetta’s yacht plays a major part in her adventures and there are just enough feats of seamanship to keep it interesting without making your eyes glaze over.
I read the books in order, but it’s not necessary to enjoy an individual story, although you may not be able to appreciate some of the recurring jokes.
If you have Kindle Unlimited, you can read these and many other books for free! For those unaware of the program, the short story is that for $9.99 a month you can read until your eyes fall out. I love to read and have a cookbook fetish (not to mention my obsession with knitting) so I can easily spend much more than the monthly subscription. You don’t even have to own a Kindle as there are reading apps available for your favorite devices. Click the link to find out more!
I have never heard of this series before. I will be on the look out for them.
They’re fun! Enjoy 🙂
As I am pretty sure everyone is aware–I am an avid (or rabid) reader. Of you don’t beleove me just go look at my sidebar on my blog–think there are over 600 book entries!! I happen to love love love this kind of book–the kind that can make me grimace and then laugh right out loud! Definitely going to be looking into getting Book 1 at the very least!
I’ve read several of the books you’ve recommended. I think you’ll like this one. It depends on your tolerance of a woman with Hetta’s particular sensibilities, hahaha. 🙂
This sounds like so much fun! Thanks for the suggestion!
They’re quick and a little silly. Perfect for squeezing into a busy day.
This is a new one for me also. I really enjoy series of books. I like getting to know the characters and invest in them.
Me, too. The characters should mature or otherwise change in response to the events in the books. Plus the writer’s voice should mature, too, especially with new writers.
A sassy Texan?! I am all over this book! Thanks for the recommendation!
Is there any other kind? 🙂
I’ve never heard of these books before. I’m looking for something new to read though, so I’ll look into them!
I thought they were fun. Hope you like them, too.
I’ll have to get them all so I could flip from one to the next as soon as I finished them!
Sounds like exactly what I did. Enjoy!
🙂
I love reading books, those books are have a great series, I wanna pick the “Just Add Salt”.
