How to Make an Eyecatching Wooden Bead Wreath

Last Updated on October 21, 2020 by lydiaf1963

I came across a wooden bead wreath in one of the big box craft stores. It was love at first sight. The combination of wooden beads with tin leaves and a buffalo plaid bow sparked my imagination. I love the colors and the look of the wooden beads with the black and white of the bow.

Wooden Bead Wreath or Ping Pong Wreath??

My inspiration piece on the left reminded me of a project created by my blogging friend Gail of Purple Hues and Me. She used ping pong balls to mimic large wooden beads. I pinned it here.

In the end, I decided to stick to wooden beads. Here’s how I made it:

Materials List

  • 10 inch circular ring
  • 20mm wooden beads with a hole large enough to thread on the ring (I bought a variety pack)
  • Heavy paper in various colors for the leaves. (I chose colors similar to the inspiration piece. They remind me of sage and bay leaves.)
  • 1.5 inch wire edged buffalo plaid ribbon
  • Thin wire (I used 24 gauge jewelry wire leftover from another project)
  • Glue gun and sticks
  • heavy duty glue (I used Gorilla Glue)
  • Mod podge
  • paint brush

Instructions

brass ring and wooden beads

1. Cut open the ring with a pair of heavy duty wire cutters and thread the beads on the hoop. Use glue on one bead to hold the two cut ends together. On my inspiration piece the beads only cover half. [I chose to go all the way around, mostly because I had plenty of beads in the pack I bought.]

2. Cut enough leaf shapes from the heavy paper to cover the bottom half of the wreath. Fold some of the leaves in half the long way. Paint mod podge on each leaf to make it glossy and allow to dry. I liked how the mod podge curled the paper so I let it dry that way.

3. Create a bow from a length of wire edged buffalo plaid ribbon.

4. Attach lengths of wire to some of the leaves that were previously folded in half. Attach them to the wreath evenly. The wire will help support them above the other leaves. [Now that the project is complete, I’m not sure this was a necessary step.]

5. Use the remaining leaves to fill in the spaces between the first set that was attached. Bend the wires attached to the first set of leaves to arrange them in a pleasing manner.

6. Attach the bow with another length of wire.

7. Create a hanging loop with wire or ribbon.

Final Thoughts

I’m so happy with how my wooden bead wreath turned out, although I think I’m going to add a leaf to the left hand side. It bugs me the two aren’t balanced, hahaha.

To be able to replicate the look of the tin leaves on my inspiration piece with paper and mod podge was quite satisfying. The colors are seasonal and will brighten up my dining room until I decorate for Christmas.

For the cost of a single wreath from the store, I have enough supplies to make a couple more if I want.
