Holiday Citrus Centerpiece

I’ve never cared for going all out with Christmas decorations but I do love a few touches here and there throughout our home. This year I decided to revisit a childhood craft and make a few pomanders for a holiday citrus centerpiece.
Pomanders date back to the middle ages where they were used to cover up the smell of medieval life. Nowadays they lend color and scent to the holiday table.
Everybody has whole cloves on hand…I actually had two small jars (that’s what happens when you don’t check your cupboards before you go shopping!). A quick internet search gave me lots of ideas for various patterns. The designs which made use of an orange zester were really attractive. I passed on them because the citrus available to me is pretty thin skinned. I was able to poke the cloves directly into the fruit instead of using a nut pick or other sharp tool. Feel free to add ribbons, raffia, or beads to complete your design.
For greenery I used bay leaves, an herb that’s widely used in Spanish cooking. A few nuts for contrast rounded out my display. The pecans were imported. The rest will be used to make seasonal treats. Small ornaments would be nice addition, too. I used one of my serving trays to hold my citrus centerpiece. It’s quite pretty, if I do say so myself.
You probably already have a tray or basket that would be perfect for your own citrus centerpiece.

Thanks, Kristen. It’s the type of project where you can add your own special touches. We’re enjoying it!
