Floral Tray Pouch Holds A Lot of Stuff

Last Updated on April 5, 2022 by lydiaf1963

Despite the challenges and imperfections in my floral tray pouch, I’m loving the way it looks. I’ll get plenty of use out of it. This project is perfect for an adventurous beginner who has made other types of pouches. You’ll learn how to deal with foam stabilizer and a long zipper.

Tray pouches open wide

For inspiration, I chose this pin which leads to a video. I like how the pouch opens flat so it’s easy to reach everything inside.

This requires the zipper to be applied in such a way it creates a diagonal line on each end. It’s a great design element and a fun way to show off a contrasting zipper.

The foam gives structure and helps the tray pouch keep its shape while open. While searching for a pattern I read comments where others used quilt batting and were happy with the result. I can see using batting to make a smaller pouch where the foam might be too heavy.

The problem with the pin is the user has to draft their own pattern. Not really a big deal but I also had difficulty following what was happening at times in the vid.

The purchased pattern comes with video tutorial

In hopes of avoiding unnecessary frustration, I ended up on Etsy where I bought the tray pouch pattern for the Roo Art Pouch from Elaine’s Sweet Life Shop. The pattern includes a detailed tutorial and a link to a private video where the designer demonstrates how to assemble the bag.

TIP: Sewing through the foam can be tricky.

Adjust your stitch length and tension to get a good looking seam.

Between the video and the photo tutorial I was able to get r done!

The theme for this month’s Sustainable Pinterest Challenge is Welcome Spring. I can’t think of anything more Springlike than a pretty floral fabric.

These particular fat quarters been sitting in my stash for… a while. So has the piece of foam used to shape the pouch. I was glad for the opportunity to use both. I only needed to buy a long zipper as I had everything else I needed.

Not only did I dip into my fabric stash, I ended up with a useful pouch that will serve me for a long time.

Welcome Spring!

  1. I love the pouch and I can see that it can hold a lot of stuff. I looked at the pattern and I love it. It opens out into a tray, quite different from the usual pouches that I’ve made before. Thanks so much for the referral to such an awesome pattern! I pinned your pouch also. Best wishes, Linda @Crafts a la mode

    1. Thanks, Linda! I think I’ll get a lot of use out of it. Have a good week! 🙂

  2. That fabric is super pretty, “Florals for Spring – groundbreaking!” I don’t care what Miranda Priestly said, I love florals for spring!
A pouch that opens out like this is very clever, I’ve made pouches where the end is open so they open out a little but never one like this. I can imagine it being useful for all sorts of things. You did a great job with a tricky make and used fabric from your stash too so win win!

    1. Thanks, Julie! I’m not surprised you love florals for spring. You have lots of lovely floral projects on Sum of Their Stories 🙂

  3. I love the fabric and lining you chose to make your adorable tray pouch! Fun to create and fun to welcome Spring! I had never heard of a “tray” pouch and was quite curious! It seems to be the perfect solution of being able to cram stuff in and get stuff out! Lol!

  4. Such a cute pouch! The floral fabric is really pretty. That pouch could hold lots of crochet hooks!

  5. I also love how this pouch opens flat so you can see everything. Very practical and great fabric choice!

    1. Thank you! The fabric was from a coordinated stack of fat quarters so I didn’t have to agonize over my choices hahaha.

  6. I like the pretty fabric you chose for your tray pouch. I’ve not seen this type of pattern before, but the end result looks so nice and sturdy. I stilled haven’t tried zippers yet ~ maybe I’ll get brave enough one day.

    1. Thanks! Zippers are tricky and intimidating. I started with a simple zippered pouch and kept going. This is the most complicated zipper I’ve done. My big goal is to sew clothing I want to wear…someday. 🙂

  7. It’s a must have thing for every woman, it stores everything! I love how you make a side holder, so that you can open it and leave it like a basket tray while it holds everything. And it’s very pretty too!

  8. Love the pouch, it looks practical and cute,
