TikTok Inspired Front Porch Sign

A porch sign dresses up the entrance to a home, doesn’t it? I’ve wanted one for a long time, but nothing really inspired me until I watched a Tik Tok video featuring Dollar Tree products combined with vinyl.

I modified the design a bit to suit the materials I had on hand. Now that the plants have had a chance to fill in, I’m really liking the results!

Materials Needed

  • Thin plastic chopping mats, available in a 2 pack at Dollar Tree. Each measures 11 x 14 inches.
  • SVG file for sign (I used this one. It’s free)
  • standard vinyl
  • transfer tape
  • Cricut or other personal cutting machine
  • flag holder
  • clips
  • large planter, approx. 16 inches in diameter and 14 inches deep
  • potting soil
  • plants — I used succulents for the first version of this project and didn’t like the result. The vinca is much nicer.

How I Assembled my Porch Sign Planter Combo

First, create the sign.

Import the SVG file into your cutter software (in my case, this is Cricut Design Space) and size it to fit the chopping mat.

My design was colorized so Design Space automatically sorted the colors into separate layers. I spent some time welding design elements together (for example, the E and L in Hello). Then each color was cut using a separate mat and the excess vinyl was removed.

steps to assemble the vinyl sign

The watermelon has a multilayer design, so I preassembled on a piece of transfer tape before adding it to the chopping mat. First the seeds, then the flesh, and finally the rind.

Next, fill the planter

Set up a large planter with stone for drainage and potting soil. Place the sign holder as deep as it will go, then place your choice of plants into the soil.

Finally, add the sign

In the video the designer used a couple pieces of stained wood and magnets to hold her sign in place. I decided to use clips I had from another project instead. They work pretty well, except the sign does blow around in the wind.

It’s simple to pick the sign up when the storm passes, but when winter comes, I’ll have to make some adjustments. Perhaps it will be as easy as creating a new sign from canvas and iron on vinyl. We’ll see.

For now, I’m cheered to see this on my front porch.

This project was part of a monthly DIY Blog Hop hosted by Tarah of Grandma’s House DIY.

The theme for this month was $20 project. I had everything else on hand so my biggest expense was the plants which cost $9.99 at the local Box*Mart.
