Give your lonely tea cup new life by creating a whimsical tea cup bird feeder.

I’ve always passed up the pretty little cups and saucers I see in the antique and secondhand stores. With our transitional lifestyle, I no longer have space to store or display them, let alone enjoy them on a regular basis. Or so I thought.

A little glue and some bird seed transforms your favorites into a cute bird feeder. Can’t you imagine a tree full of delicate porcelain cups and saucers? You’ll find all kinds of examples on Pinterest or a Google image search, but read on to see how I made mine.

After deciding what to make for the Creative Craft Bloggers Challenge garden theme for May, I had a great time exploring the antique and thrift stores in a nearby town with a friend of mine. This particular cup and saucer is from Mikasa. I didn’t know that at the time; the appeal to me was it was part of a set of three cups and three saucers for $3. I saw other single sets, but I liked the idea of having matching feeders. I plan to give one to my daughter and another to my sister.

I used a glue for ceramics, like E6000, to attach the cup to the saucer and enough tape to hold everything in place while the glue set. A little matching twine was used to make a hanger for our tea cup bird feeder. It’s perfect for hanging directly from a tree branch or from a plant hook.

Don’t be fooled by the unprotected belly…it’s a trap!

I chose a branch from our backyard red bud tree which was quite pretty last week but now is in the transition between flowers and leaves. We learned years ago that bird feeders are actually cat feeders, especially where our calico is concerned. After watching her leap up and knock a bird out of the air, we took our standard feeders down. I took care in hanging mine. Hopefully the birds will enjoy a safe and quiet “tea time.”
