A Pair of Knit Hats Perfect for Little Ones
Last Updated on November 6, 2017 by lydiaf1963
When my children were small it was my mother in law’s duty to remind to “put a hat on that child.” At the time I thought it was kind of funny how obsessive she was about it. Now that I’m a grandmother myself I find myself fretting over Ps bare feet (it’s ok as long as his toes aren’t blue, I’m told) and bare head. If you’re a grandparent, have no fear. Here’s a pair of hats perfect for little heads.
Knit Hats for Babies and Toddlers
The youngest grandchild is just 6 weeks old. I made him a simple hat with ear flaps and a braided tassel for a whimsical touch. The pattern is available from Sarah Shepherd. The clearly written and easy to follow instructions include directions for sizing a hat for newborns to toddlers. It’s knit flat and then sewn up the back. The two ear flaps are created separately then joined to the main body. After a moss stitch brim, the rest of the hat is working in stockinette stitch and then decreased.
The hat in the photo is made from Katia Inca yarn, an acrylic and wool blend. It was knit on 10mm (US size 15) straight needles.
This colorful tri-cornered hat is too big for my little monkey doll but fortunately it stands on its own and was ready to smile for the camera. This hat was fairly straightforward to knit with the added challenge of finishing the top using kitchener stitch and adding an I-Cord detail. The pattern is available from Crystal Palace Yarns and includes instructions to make a 15″ hat which should fit many children as it will stretch.
I made this hat using the same Katia Inca yarn but on 10mm DPNs. You’ll also need a tapestry needle to work the Kitchener’s stitch.
One ball of the Inca yarn was more than enough to make these two hats. The instructions will tell you how much yarn you’ll need should you choose a different type of yarn.
EDIT FOR NOVEMBER 2017
When I wrote this post my youngest grandchild was a newborn. It’s hard to believe he’s just turned ONE! As it happens, the monkey used to model the baby hat was a bit prophetic. He was walking at 10 months and has turned out to be quite a climber!
If you want to use the same Katia Inca yarn I did to make a hat for your little monkey, you’ll find a really good selection at Love Knitting and take advantage of their Big November sale!
