Moving: The Ultimate In Decluttering

A few months ago our landlady informed us she was raising our rent when our lease was renegotiated in November. Even with the increase our rent is pretty cheap considering we live in the Centro (downtown). On the other hand, since the Burger King opened at the end of the street the amount of noise we’ve had to deal with has increased every year.
I’m grateful for ear plugs…
One night it was particularly bad. Our TV was turned up all the way and we still couldn’t hear it over the noise from the street. Rick and I looked at one another and I said, “Let’s see what else is out there.” So we started looking for a new place and were able to find one in a quiet neighborhood. There’s a museum at one end of the street and a convent on the other, as opposed to a teen magnet. The apartment has been completely remodelled and the kitchen, while small, will be brand new as will the bathroom.
Best of all there’s a third bedroom which means I’ll have my own little office!
After we did the Lenten Declutter Challenge, I felt like I’d trimmed my stuff down to manageable levels. But now that I have to pack it, move it and unpack it on the other end, it’s time for another purge. I don’t want to be like one of my friends who moved a comic book collection three times…only things I love and use will be moving with me.
The moving company dropped off some boxes this morning and tomorrow we’re going to IKEA to order armoires since there are no closets in the new space. We’ve already started eating down the items in the pantry and freezer. My personal goal is to get rid of at least a tenth of my stuff.
I’ll miss our bright, sunny piso but I’m really excited to move into our new place and start decorating!
How about you? Do you have time for a little purge before fall activities take over? Have you moved unopened boxes from a previous move?
Good luck with the move!!
New place, new environment – and lots of busy and fun times decorating it 🙂
I’m looking forward to it, Winnie. Thanks! 🙂
