Heart Trivet Made from I Cord

Last Updated on January 18, 2019 by lydiaf1963

Do you realize Valentine’s Day is less than a month away? Are you planning to make something for your sweetie(s)? How about something decorative that will also use up some of your scrap yarn? Try your hand at an i cord heart trivet. It’s a fun project that doesn’t take a lot of effort if you use a knitting mill.

I cord is what you get when you use a knitting mill or spool knitter. You can also make the cord with a pair of double pointed knitting needles or a crochet hook, but it will take a lot longer. Check out my tutorial on how to use a knitting mill for more information.

My original idea was to make a woven trivet, but that turned out to be such a pain in the neck I decided to try something else.

When I was a kid, a popular yarn craft was to use strands of yarn to fill in a drawing and make a picture. My mother had an elaborate wall hanging based on Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. It had a burlap background and was very attractive. I wish I had a photo of it to share. (Does anyone remember this craft? Or know if it has a proper name?) Anyway, I thought I’d fill in a heart shape with my i cord.

I cut a heart out of a piece of heavy paper and then used the cord to fill in the shape, gluing down and pinning the pieces as I went along. After the glue dried I trimmed away the excess paper. It added some stability to the project.

This would have worked out a lot better if I’d used my long pieces of i cord but I’d already cut it up when I attempted to make my woven piece. Instead of grafting the cut ends together, I was lazy and used glue to secure the loose ends. They poked up in the most annoying manner and the spots where the ends met were obvious. I covered up the worst ones with chocolate in the first image, hahaha.

This was pretty much a project fail. Oh well, live and learn. The next one will be better, as will yours. On the bright side, I used up some more yarn from my stash. That the project isn’t that attractive is beside the point, right?
