Does Makeup Expire?

Last Updated on December 26, 2017 by lydiaf1963

I’m not a big makeup person beyond the standard foundation, eyes and lips. That’s not to say I don’t have cosmetics. Since I’m not a big makeup person some of them can get old, and continuing to use them might not be a good idea. Last summer, I used old face moisturizer/sunscreen while we were on vacation and got a weird reaction, which led me to purging quite a number of items from my cosmetics case. If you’ve ever wondered, “Does makeup expire?” this post will hopefully answer your questions.

Use our chart to help you decide to keep or toss.

If your makeup doesn’t look right, smell right or feel right it may be getting old…or it may be contaminated. Either way you might want to get rid of it.

During my research all of the sites recommended getting rid of eye makeup if you get an infection. For many of us, it would mean starting over as you’d have to get rid of shadow, eyeliner and mascara.

Another good idea was to mark the product with the date you opened it in order to remind you when to throw it away.

Now you know the answer to “Does makeup expire?” It’s YES!

Once you’ve gotten rid of the items nearing the end of their shelf life, sort through what’s left and decide whether to keep or toss based on whether the color or type of makeup suit you. Don’t like the way the liquid eyeliner feels? Toss. How about that lipstick that makes your teeth look yellow? Toss. Colors that fade as soon as you put them on? Toss. You get the idea. Why make your day more hectic by having to sort through makeup you will never use?
