If you’re into fitness you’ve probably heard of body composition. It’s the reason we have so many different body types. People can weigh the same, but a person with more lean tissue is going to look thinner than one with more fat tissue. Measuring body composition can be complicated and many methods only measure one component, like fat or bone density. A device like the Beets BLU Wireless Scale(affiliate link) measures the body’s resistance to estimate body composition via a very mild current. You’ll need to stand barefoot on the scale for it to work properly (unless all you need to know is weight), and it’s recommended that you weigh yourself at the same time every day. I usually do it after my morning shower.
The scale then uploads the data via a bluetooth connection to an app on your smartphone where the data is collected and turned into useful information. In addition to weight, you’ll also be able to record your BMI as well as an estimate of your hydration level. If your phone is on, the app will read your weight out loud. This may or may not be a good thing!
Of all of the data collected, the hydration level may be the most important. If you’re over hydrated or dehydrated the other values are likely to be incorrectly estimated. But beyond that, even if you’re not interested in the amount of fat you’re carrying around, you should be paying attention to how much fluid you’re taking in.
Water is used in nearly every bodily process, such as urine production, controlling body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure and maintaining a healthy metabolism. When the scale is tells you the percent bodily water is between 45 to 60% for women and 50 – 65% for men, you know you’re ingesting enough fluids.
Most folks get enough water through drinking it, but it’s also found in many fruits and vegetables. Other sources are milk, sports drinks and other flavored beverages with water as the main component. Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages tend to have a dehydrating effect, so limit the amounts you drink.
Most sources tend to recommend 8 glasses of water a day, or two quarts. People who eat a lot of fruits and vegetables probably don’t need as much. Drinking sufficient water helps to stave off feelings of hunger (thirst is often mistaken for hunger) as well as helping our bodies function at their best level. If you’re just starting a diet, it’s very important to increase the amount of water you drink as water is necessary to remove waste and ease the symptoms of detox, a common side effect of dieting.
The Beets BLU Wireless Scale(affiliate link) will let you know if your body is at its optimum hydration level. In addition to recording your weight, it will also calculate your percentage fat and muscle and BMI. The app will track multiple users It’s compatible with most Bluetooth smartphones although the manufacturer recommends downloading the app Smart Scale Beets BLU to check for compatibility issues before ordering the scale. Adults of all fitness levels will find the Beets BLU Wireless Scale to be a useful device.
