The Messy Doodle Hat features a slip stitch pattern which means you’re only working with one color at a time. The pattern is perfect for men or women.

I like the chunky look of this pattern from Small Branch Designs made with super bulky yarn. It’s an easy pattern for a beginner with sizing for both adults and children.

If you’d like to try your hand at Fair Isle knitting, this pattern from Meridian Designs features a unisex design that works up quickly thanks to the chunky yarns. Sized for men and women.

The only crochet pattern in this set, Convertible Waves by The Purple Egg gives you lots of options. There’s a drawstring version that can be closed, tightened around a messy bun or opened up to wear as a neck warmer. There’s also an regular slouchy style hat.

One of my favorite hats is this mother/daughter set from Bonita Patterns which features the super cool crocodile stitch. There are instructions for both children and adults. The designer recommends a long transition self striping yarn to get the multicolor effect without switching yarns.

Don’t you love the pretty shell stitches in this hat from Merry Crochet? It’s perfect for cool weather jogs or just for looking awesome while raking leaves.

I love this Estelita hat and scarf set from Annie’s Catalog, especially the picot edging around the hat and the chunky rib texture. The pattern also includes directions for no hole, for a more classic set.

You will incorporate an elastic hair tie into the hat from Crochet by Jennifer. This allows the hat to stretch over a bun but still stay snug for a ponytail. The pattern has been designed to work with any weight of yarn and any gauge.

The Ridges Hat from Softyarn Designs is worked flat and features an integrated button band that allows you to undo one button for a ponytail or undo two buttons for that messy bun. The designer used merino yarn to make the hat shown and recommends sock weight yarn for a fun look.

If you prefer a chunky yarn, give Misty Frost HR’s Chunky Love Hat a try. Love the color selection and bold design in the sample piece.

Autumn Dust messy bun hat and cowl makes good use of Red Heart’s luscious Unforgettable line of yarns and the pretty star stitch to add interest. Check out the picot edges on the hat and cowl.

The All Buttoned Up Beanie is sized for young girls and teens. It’s a ponytail hat as opposed to a messy bun hat, but I love the button detailing and so will whoever you give this hat to!

So there you have it! A dozen messy bun hats to knit and crochet. Do you see any you like? Grab your yarn, hooks and needles and get started!
