Grapevine Swag for A Porch

Last Updated on September 25, 2017 by lydiaf1963

When I was in Maryland this Spring my sister and I worked on making a grapevine swag for her porch. It turned out really nice! The grapevines came from an area of her garden that she cleared, making this project a good candidate for the Monthly Craft Room Destash Challenge.

While a pile of grapevines by a tree isn’t technically the craft room, the vines can be used to make a variety of home decor items and are a popular choice for making wreaths. In addition to working from our “stash” the other rule for the challenge is to limit spending for materials and equipment to $10. I think we might have been over between the LED lights (bought on sale) and the batteries, but not by much.

We started by sorting through the grapevines. We wanted long supple vines for the bulk of the swag. We used them to make two braids and wrapped them around each other for the base. It took both of us to manage the vines plus an assist from the picnic table.

The shorter vines were woven into the base to add some bulk. Finally the set of LED lights was woven into the grapevine swag (easier said than done!) We chose a set of lights that are run by batteries instead of plugging in to an outlet and tucked the pack into the swag after it was hung.

We used jute twine to secure the ends together as well as to help hang the swag.

It really looks nice and adds a nice touch to the porch of my sister’s old farmhouse, don’t you agree?

  1. Absolutely…that looks great on the farmhouse porch! I’ve never attempted making my own grapevine garland YET, but Kudsu is supposed to work well for that. I’ve always wanted to try it. Y’all did good!

I think kudzu might be a very good vine to work with. I’ve read that you can eat it, but I’m not sure I want to try it 🙂

  2. How nice to have grapevines to create your own swag. It turned out so pretty. I bet it is so lovely in the evening with the lights on.

      Yes, very homey! Thanks 🙂

  3. What a wonderful idea and craft!!! I am very much in love with it. Also I love that you were able to use the vines from her garden, so she didn’t have to throw them away and saved a lot of money. I just saw the price of a vine wreath at my local florist…ridiculous I am telling you. Can’t imagine what a garland like this would have cost ya.

Good point about the cost. I don’t want to think about it, either! 😉

  4. The swag is so pretty with the lights. You should be able to use the swag year round if you like. It looks so good on the porch and I love how you were able to reuse the vines instead of throwing them out.

  5. Most definitely looks great on the farmhouse porch, and well done on ya for braiding it! That seems like a lot of work!! Looks amazing though!

  6. It does add a very nice touch and I’m sure you and your sister had lots of fun making it together! I’m stopping by from the Crafty Destash Challenge.

We did have a good time, Teresa, thanks! Then we enjoyed a beer (and a little nap) on the sofa.
